during the course of further work to be reported at a later date. It is certain that there are differences in the effect of diet on different tissues as Long (1953) has found that, although the hexokinase activity of intestinal mucosa is depressed by a lowcarbohydrate diet, that of intestinal muscle is unaffected. In so far as attempts to reproduce the anomalies of carbohydrate metabolism observed in the adult ruminant are concerned, these have been successful and it may be concluded from the similarities between the adult ruminant and the fat-fed nonruminant that many of the apparent abnormalities in the former are due to the peculiar digestive processes of the ruminant rather than to specific hormonal or enzymic differences.

Hormonal priming to overcome drought stress and aging damage in groundnut seed (Arachis hypogaea L.)

Groundnut seed priming was performed with an aqueous solution of gibberellic acid (GA3) (0, 50, 100, and 150 ppm for 18h) and accelerated aging (96 h) was done prior to drought stress (-0.4, -0.6, and -0.8 MPa), then recovered. Investigated traits were germination percentage, mean germination time, germination rate, vigor index, plumule length, radicle length, seedling length, malondialdehyde c...

Changes in oxo acid concentrations during the growth of groundnut seedlings.

In recent years we have been investigating the occurrence, distribution and metabolism of unsaturated amino acids in groundnut plants (Arachi8 hypogaea). Three related amino acids have been identified, namely (i) y-methyleneglutamic acid (y-MGA), (ii) its amide, y-methyleneglutamine (y-MG), and (iii) its decarboxylation product, y-amino-a-methylenebutyric acid (Done & Fowden, 1952; Fowden & Don...

Effect of hydropriming on morphological and physiological performance of aged groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) seeds

Low viability and poor vigour due to seed deterioration are major problems for successful agricultural production. In this experiment, the ability of hydropriming to ameliorate seed deterioration damage was studied in groundnut. Groundnut seeds were subjected to accelerated ageing for 96 hours at 40 °C and then hydroprimed at 25 °C for 6, 12 and 18 hours. Regardless of duration, hydropriming si...
